The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is warning consumers to steer clear of erectile dysfunction pills Viagra and Levitra.
The agency says: “This new warning comes on the heels of a three-month review by the MHRA which found the pills were ‘not working properly’ and that patients should immediately consult their GP.
“The MHRA’s review found Viagra and Levitra were not effective in treating erectile dysfunction and the agency will be issuing a new warning as a precautionary measure.”
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra and Levitra, is known to work as well as taking the pill, but can work alongside taking food.
“The MHRA has issued a new warning to patients to consult their GP before taking these tablets,” the MHRA says.
“Patients should only take these tablets when they have experienced difficulties in getting or maintaining an erection satisfactory for sexual activity.”
The MHRA says: “Patients should not expect immediate relief from their symptoms, but should speak to their GP or qualified healthcare provider before taking sildenafil tablets, if they have experienced any of the following symptoms for sexual activity:
• Flushing: This is more common with Viagra than with the tablets and may be caused by physical conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
• Headache: This is more common with Viagra than with the tablets and may be caused by psychological conditions such as anxiety or depression.
• Indigestion: This is more common with Viagra than with the tablets and may be caused by physical conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
“Sildenafil tablets are not suitable for patients taking nitrate medications or using certainAlpha-blockers.”
In a three-month review of 4,000 patients, the agency found no evidence of a “serious risk of low blood pressure” or of a “prolonged duration of erections”.
The MHRA said: “The MHRA’s review of 4,000 patients revealed that sildenafil tablets were not as effective as patients had hoped and patients should consult their GP or qualified healthcare provider before taking these tablets.
“However, the review found that patients who took the tablets were ‘firm and resilient’ and that sexual activity was a potential side effect of using them.”
The MHRA said: “The review pointed to no evidence that these tablets were addictive or that they could lead to serious drug interactions.”
The MHRA has not commented on the review’s findings.
This latest warning comes as the MHRA considers whether to take a ‘risk-benefit’ analysis.
The agency is investigating if the new warning applies to Viagra and Levitra.
A spokeswoman for Pfizer, which makes Viagra and Levitra, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals said: “We are aware of the concerns raised by patients and the MHRA’s review of these pills is in line with our expectations.”

Read moreAcross the world, the quality of erectile dysfunction treatments has decreased significantly over the past decade, driven by the growing number of prescriptions filled for ED treatments in Britain.
The number of men seeking treatment for erectile dysfunction has increased from just over 1 in 100 in the 1960s to around 1 in 10 in the early 1990s. Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or keep an erection hard enough for sex.
The rise of online platforms like Viagra and Levitra has seen a “significant growth” in the number of prescriptions filled, with the first being telehealth companies and the latter expanding to medical services such as gynaecology and endocrinology.
The rise of e-commerce platforms has also seen a “significant growth” in the number of prescriptions filled, with the e-commerce platform becoming “the next-awaited solution” for patients seeking treatment for erectile dysfunction.
According to data from the NHS, the number of prescriptions filled in 2013 was around 25, but since 2011 the figure has fallen to around 1, down from 7,500 a year earlier, when only 1,300 were filled.

Viagra 50mg tablet contains an active component such as Sildenafil. This medication is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It contains the active ingredient sildenafil citrate, which belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It increases blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation, which helps men achieve and maintain an erection. Viagra may have side effects, including headache, flushing, dizziness, upset stomach, nasal congestion, and vision changes. It should not be taken with certain medications or conditions, so it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional before using it. Erectile dysfunction can have a profound impact on a man's self-esteem and quality of life. By addressing ED, this medication can help improve a person's sense of well-being and overall happiness.
Individuals with a history of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart problems (angina, heart failure, irregular heartbeats) or recent heart attack, should exercise caution when using Viagra. The sexual activity itself can strain the heart and can further increase the strain by increasing blood flow. Consult with a healthcare professional to assess the risks and benefits in such cases. This medication can cause a mild decrease in blood pressure. Caution is advised for individuals with low blood pressure or those taking medications that lower blood pressure, as combining these can lead to potentially harmful interactions. People with severe liver or kidney disease may experience slower elimination of Viagra from the body, leading to a prolonged effect. Dosage adjustments may be necessary in such cases.
